Deliveroo to India

3rd January 2018

Deliveroo is set to launch in India. The London-based company is looking to hire a country head to spearhead operations and build a team. With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, India represents one of the world’s largest markets with some of its most densely populated cities.

However, Deliveroo faces competition from major rivals including UberEats, Swiggy and Zomato. Indian taxi company Ola also recently entered the country’s  food delivery space by acquiring Foodpanda India from German company Delivery Hero for $200m.

Founded in 2013 by William Shu and Greg Orlowski, Deliveroo has a presence in 13 countries. Its rapid growth has been fuelled by a string of increasingly large funding rounds, including a £285m Series F in September that saw it achieve a $2bn valuation, and a £275m Series E in August 2016. This has enabled the company to launch in more locations and invest in technology to improve algorithms and artificial intelligence systems that speed delivery times and pinpoint popular local dishes.
